Declaring 10 defendants of the case of harassing the pop star couple Rukantha Gunathilaka and Chandralekha Perera as guilty, Panadura high Court Judge Ms. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardhana acquitted R.B. Somarathne.
And the other 10 defendants were found guilty for all the 5 charges. 6 months jail with hard labour was the punishment for first offence and 1 year jail with hard labour each for other 4 offences. Judge ruled that all the jail terms should be passed individually.
Defence counsel U.R. de Silva said that he is going to appeal against the decision.
The defendants are the security guards of for President Chandrika Kumarathunga.
These people who were police constables, had to be trapped in the case for 13 years and their jobs too had been lost.
The attack on Rukantha and Chandealekha was don on the 26th January 2000 at their residence in Polgasowita around 8 pm.
The defendants were charged of harassing by using armed violence , robbery, and 7 more indictable offences.
